Concrete Calculation Methodology
Complete mathematical derivations, material yield constants, and physical assumptions governing every calculation on The Concrete Calculator.
1. Rectangular Slab & Pad Formula
Slab volume is calculated by multiplying length, width, and thickness in consistent units (feet), then dividing by 27 to convert from cubic feet into cubic yards:
Ready-mix suppliers batch concrete in 0.25 yd³ increments. Our engine rounds up to the next 0.25 yd³ after applying the waste multiplier.
2. Cylindrical Columns, Piers & Sonotubes
Round elements use circular cross-sectional geometry:
3. Fence Post Hole Displacement Math
Unlike generic calculators that treat post holes as solid cylinders, our engine subtracts the volume of the embedded wood or metal post:
4. Bagged Yield Constants
Certified yields for ASTM C387 packaged concrete mixes:
| Bag Weight | Yield (Cubic Feet) | Bags per 1.0 Cubic Yard | Pallet Count |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 lb bag | 0.60 cu ft | 45 bags | 42 bags |
| 60 lb bag | 0.45 cu ft | 60 bags | 56 bags |
| 50 lb bag | 0.375 cu ft | 72 bags | 64 bags |
| 40 lb bag | 0.30 cu ft | 90 bags | 80 bags |
5. Rebar Weight Specifications
Governed by ASTM A615 / A706 reinforcing bar standards:
- #3 Rebar (3/8" diameter): 0.376 pounds per linear foot.
- #4 Rebar (1/2" diameter): 0.668 pounds per linear foot (residential standard).
- #5 Rebar (5/8" diameter): 1.043 pounds per linear foot (commercial & heavy load).
